Good morning, Swansea!

Pumpkin season is back, and with Halloween a little over a fortnight away, it’s time for our yearly round-up of the best places to pick your own.

There’s one change from last year’s list. Penyfodau Fawr Farm near Garden Village has grown its last crop - the pumpkin field is making way for a solar farm - although the farm shop and milk shed are carrying on as usual.

Everything here is within about 45 minutes of the city, so grab your wellies and enjoy!

📍 Three Crosses, SA4 3PB

Billed this year as the biggest pumpkin festival in Wales, Rob Morgan’s Christmas tree farm needs booking ahead with a Car Pass (£5.26 a car, covering up to six people). That gets you into the pumpkin field, the Haunted Trail through the Christmas trees and a visit to the reindeer, with photo spots like the giant pumpkin house along the way. Pumpkins are paid for as you pick them, and dogs on leads are welcome everywhere except the reindeer area.

There are two add-ons. The Witches of the Farm is an hour-long daytime quest for under-12s, at £11.51 a child and £5.78 an adult. The Harvest Calling is a 12+ night-time horror walk through the maize field that finishes with a chainsaw run. It’s £10.47 a ticket and runs on 29–31 October only.

📍 Llanmorlais, Gower, SA4 3UH

A small family-run petting farm, where many of the animals are rescued pets that have been given a home. For Halloween, it’s added pumpkin picking (£2–£12 a pumpkin) and spooky photo spots alongside the usual animal handling. There’s also a café for a warming coffee. Entry is £5, and the barns are under cover, so it’s a decent bet if the weather turns. Wellies are recommended, but the site is buggy and wheelchair friendly.

📍 Ponthenri, Llanelli, SA15 5RL

Daytime picking costs £10.58 a car, and there’s a moonlit evening session at £12.68, with pumpkins paid for on top. This year’s new addition is a Pumpkin House for photos. There’s also a giant pumpkin, a corn cannon, axe throwing, face painting and a hay bale maze for the little ones. If it rains, you can buy your pumpkins inside the Pumpkin Barn and warm up in The Cauldron Café. On selected days there’s a quiet picking session between 2pm and 3pm.

📍 Pyle, CF33 4RR

The simplest of the lot, on Ty Coch Farm just outside Pyle. There’s no booking, no entry fee and free parking, so you just turn up, grab a wheelbarrow and pay for whatever you pick. It’s open 10am–4.30pm on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 October, then every day from 24 to 31 October. Leave the dog at home, though, as they’re not allowed on site.

📍 Cowbridge, Vale of Glamorgan, CF71 7FF

The furthest of the five at around 45 minutes, but there’s enough here to fill most of a day. A daytime ticket costs £12 a car off-peak or £15 at peak times, plus a booking fee. It covers tractor trailer rides out to the patch, a maize maze, more than ten photo spots and the farm’s goats, alpacas, pigs and Highland cows. Pumpkins, the pumpkin catapult, pony rides, paintballing and the fairground games all cost extra. Dogs on leads are welcome around the food and activity area but not on the patch itself.

On selected evenings it switches to twilight picking from 7pm to 10.30pm. There’s a scare maze full of live actors, fire performers and stilt walkers dressed as crows. It’s £10 a person and recommended for ages 8+. It runs on 16 and 17 October, then every night from 23 to 31 October.

That’s your lot for this year. If you’ve been to one of these, or there’s a patch you think deserves a place on next year’s list, hit reply and let me know.

I’ll catch you on Sunday!

Andrew
