Good morning, Swansea! This is the Swansea Scoop - the local newsletter that's like hitting all the green lights on Mumbles Road 😊

This week's got everything from Max Boyce at the Arena to a dog-friendly cinema screening, plus tarot readings, a farm festival, and more. I'm not sure what my weekend plans say about me… but apparently I'm considering donkey rides and having my fortune told while my dog watches Beethoven 🐶

Whatever you’re up to, have a good one, and I'll catch you on Wednesday!

Andrew.

P.S. We’re now at over 7,000 newsletter subscribers! Know someone who’d enjoy the Scoop? Please forward this email to them and ask them to subscribe here 🙂

World-Class Guitar, Up Close 🎶

On Saturday September 27th, internationally acclaimed classical guitarist Raymond Burley - who normally performs at major concert halls around the world - is playing a one-off show right here in Swansea at Sketty Park Community Centre.

Raymond has spent decades touring extensively across Europe, Africa, the Americas and beyond, and recorded with the UK’s finest orchestras including the BBC Symphony and Philharmonia.

This is a rare chance to experience a world-class musician live in an intimate venue right on your doorstep, hosted by the Swansea Classical Guitar Circle.

Doors open 6.30 PM for the show to start at 7 PM, and tickets are just £15. Interval refreshments are included!

WEDNESDAY'S SCOOP (ICYMI) 🦢

If you've ever peered down over the Sail Bridge or wandered along the river near SA1 on a still morning, you might have noticed areas of the water doing something weird. Beneath the calm surface of the Tawe, there's a gentle fizz, like a giant glass of tonic water.

It isn't a trick of the light - Swansea's river is literally being bubbled. And the reason why takes us back to the early 1990s, when a bold engineering project changed the shape of the city… but also gave it a problem no one quite expected.

SWANSEA CHARITY MARKS MAJOR MILESTONE 🎂

This week, we caught up with Amanda Lervy, Operations Director at Local Aid, a Swansea-based charity doing amazing work with some of the most vulnerable members of the community - and to learn why 2025 is such a special year for them.

Tell us a bit about Local Aid: Local Aid was founded by the late Denise Inger as a way to support children and young people with additional learning needs, and their families. Our flagship initiative, the Buddies Programme, creates valuable out-of-school play and leisure opportunities for young people aged 12–19 who are affected by disabilities - helping them to develop self-confidence, independence, and friendship.

You’re turning 40 this year - how are you marking the milestone? We’re holding a special event on September 25th to celebrate how far we’ve come! It’s a chance to thank our volunteers, remember Denise, and share some of the amazing stories from over the years. We’re really proud to have the Lord Lieutenant and the Mayor of Swansea joining us too.

How can people in Swansea support Local Aid? There are loads of ways to get involved, whether that’s volunteering, donating, or visiting one of our charity shops (based in Ravenhill, Morriston, Uplands and Gorseinon). And if you just want to find out more, we’re always happy to chat.

For more information and to get involved, visit the Local Aid website.
